New Amsterdam Episode 1 Premiere!

On Thursday, March 6 2025 at 18:00 CET, the first episode of New Amsterdam will arrive on YouTube!

We’ll learn all about why the Dutch United East India Company enlisted Captain Henry Hudson; about the Halve Maen’s arrival in the Mohawk, Mahican, and Lenape territory; how the first trading company, the New Netherland Company, made the first deals with the Indians; what the West India Company was supposed to do; and how the “sale” of Manhattan island really went down. All sprinkled with the happenings of the Eighty Years’ War in the home country.

Hope you’ll enjoy it!

Good work. You are addressing some long ignored details.

Hi, I just found your New Amsterdam video series on YouTube. Great job of covering this important part of history. I look forward to watching the full series (still on episode#1 right now.)

I’ve been doing some translating of the Articles of Surrender of New Amsterdam (which was likely written mainly by Johannes de Decker) as well as poetry by Johannes’s cousin Jeremias de Decker (Lof de Geldzuckt and some other poems.) The Articles of Surrender of New Amsterdam have been translated already, but I was particularly interested in language used in the original treaty to understand to whom each article applied (inherence laws for whom, freedom of religion for whom, etc..).
I could not find an English translation for Lof de Geldzuckt, and that one is taking some time, but well worth it. If you have any question about Johannes de Decker and his family’s role in the Dutch West India Company, I’d be glad to pass along some research I’ve been doing over the years. Feel free to email me.
Or here’s a good link by somebody else that I found while doing research:
